Netflix may be shaking up the television industry, but it’s not stopping HBO’s supremacy at the Emmys. The premium cable network walked away with 99 nominations this morning, with Game of Thrones earning 19 nominations, the most of any show this season.
While the TV Academy finally acknowledged that Peter Dinklage isn’t the only actor in GoT, they forgot to nominated Charles Dance. The other actors that were nominated aside from Dinklage were Lena Headey for Supporting Actress and Diana Rigg for Guest Actress. Perhaps the issue is that the cast is so large that no one actor gets a sizeable moment to shine. Still, the fact is that they were all spectacular in their parts this past season.
GoT was also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Neil Marshall) and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series (David Benioff and D.B. Weiss).
Ryan Murphy’s The Normal Heart earned 16 nominations in total, including Outstanding Television Movie. Mark Ruffalo was nomianted for Lead Actor in a Miniseries/Movie. There’s a good chance that someone in the film walks away with Supporting Actor in the field, since four were nominted - Matt Bomer, Joe Mantello, Alfred Molina and Jim Parsons. Julia Roberts was also nominated in the lead actress category.
True Detective exploded onto the Emmy scene in the Drama fiel, earnined 12 nominations. Both Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey were nominated ofr Outstanding Lead Actor and the series was nominated in the top drama category.
Veep scored nine nominations. Other HBO shows that earned multiple nods were Boardwalk Empire (7), Silicon Valley (5), Treme (4), Billy Crystal :700 Sundays (3), Vice (3), Girls (2), Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight (2), The Newsroom (2), Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles (2), True Blood (2) and Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley (2).
