Netflix also received 12 nods for the prison comedy "Orange is the New Black."

An article at The Huffington Post compared the competition of HBO and Netflix. Author Alexis Kleinman described HBO as "the king of Emmy nominations" and Netflix as a "threat to the throne." Netflix had 14 nominations in 2013, and this year the nods more than just doubled. While online popularity is growing for TV shows, Netflix is efficient in catching up and is more cost-effective when compared to HBO.
Right now Netflix is the 7th on the list of networks for getting nominations, however, it is climbing up the ladder quickly. It is true that HBO had a head start. It wont be long before Netflix catches up. As Netflix grows, the amount of exclusive content is likely to increase and the competition with HBO is going to be more stronger.

According to CBS News, Television Academy CEO Bruce Rosenblum was right about online and cable shows dominating the TV scene by describing it as a "rapidly expanding definition of television." He announced the nominations on Thursday morning with host Carson Daly and actress Mindy Kaling at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in Los Angeles.
