Question: What do you call a 71-year-old NFL owner who is foolishly acting as a general manager? Answer: “Jerry’s World.” Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones recently told us that he came very close to drafting QB Johnny Manziel with the 16th pick in the first-round of the 2014 NFL Draft back in May.
“I want you to know that almost as I was handing in the card, it was that close to putting that Manziel card in. It was that close. I looked over to my son, Stephen, our chief executive officer, and I said ‘I took the right pick.' ... He was the top player by three players on our board at the time that we were sitting there looking at him,” Jones said, according to StarTelegram.com.
This statement comes during Cowboys training camp and after Jones told the media back in May that choosing Manziel “wasn’t even a thought,” according to CBSSports.com. He called the drafting of OL Zack Martin the "right football decision" immediately after the pick was in.
So, what we have here is just another case of Jones opening his mouth when he should keep it zipped. There are many topics that could be talked about at Cowboys training-camp. Football should be the word of the day, not how close Johnny-Football actually came to wearing the star on his helmet.
Cowboys starting QB Tony Romo is now 34-years-old and the question of whether they should draft Manziel was quite relevant at the time. Now though, the last thing Romo wants to hear is how close his franchise came in choosing his replacement this season.
Romo was rock-solid in 2013 as he hurled 31 TD’s and 3,821 yards. Let’s hope Romo out-performs Manziel in 2014 or “Jerry’s World” will continue to pump out those good-old quotes during the season. Heck, the next quote might be how close the Cowboys came in trading for Manziel in September.
