Singer/songwriter Jewel told fans on her blog that she and her husband, rodeo rider Ty Murray, are calling it quits after 16 years together.
After writing at length about her feelings and living in the public eye, the singer revealed, “My husband, friend and partner of 16 years and I have decided to get a divorce.”
Even though divorce may be a tough process to go through, Jewel said that the two hope to move forward as peacefully as possible.
“For some time we have been engaged in a private and difficult, but thoughtful and tender undoing of ourselves,” she wrote. “Allowing ourselves the time and space to redefine what we are to each other with love rather than malice."
Apparently, Jewel and Murray decided that it was not a good idea to keep their marriage together with anger in the mix.
“Instead we have chosen the much more difficult task of undoing ourselves stich by stich, and releasing each other with love so that we may take on our new form: dear friends and devoted co-parents of our beloved son Kase,” Jewel continued. “We have no desire to damage ourselves and each other in the process.”
As ABC News points out, the couple married in 2008. Their son, Kase, was born in July 2011.
The couple later issued a joint statement to ABC News that reiterates much of what Jewel wrote in her letter on her site.
“Our dedication to our son is unwavering and we are both committed to being the best partners in raising our son,” the statement reads. “Due to the spirit in which we have gone about this separation, we trust we can remain dear friends who hold each other in high esteem, which is so important to us as parents -- as we wish only what is best for our son.”
The “You Were Meant For Me” singer, whose last name is Kilcher, last released an album in 2011 and has turned to acting in recent years. She played June Carter Cash in the TV movie Ring of Fire.
