Wide receiver Jordy Nelson signed a four-year contract extension with the Green Bay Packers on Saturday.
The extension comes as Nelson was about to enter the final year of his contract. He was scheduled to make $3.5 million this year. The new deal is worth $39 million with $14.2 million guaranteed, according to NFL.com. Nelson was looking to make at least $10 million a year. He will make $9.76 million a year under the new deal and will get a $11.5 million signing bonus.
"Jordy's hard work and dedication has made him a good player, teammate and a core member of this team," Packers general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement. "We are pleased to come to an agreement that will extend his Packers career."
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said that Nelson is a great ambassador for the Packers, and the he consistently performs at a high level and is the ultimate pro.
Nelson is one of the most undervalued receivers in the NFL. He has spent his entire six-year career with the Packers. He had his most productive season last year where he had 85 catches for 1,314 yards, which are career-highs, and eight touchdowns, according to ESPN. In his career Nelson has 4,590 receiving yards and 36 touchdown catches.
The Packers can now work on a deal for Randall Cobb.
