The father of Juventus star Carlos Tevez was kidnapped in Argentina and then released after Tevez paid a ransom to the criminals.
His father was kidnapped outside of Buenos Aires and was held for eight hours before Tevez paid the $400,000 ransom, according to the New York Daily News.
According to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport the kidnappers raised the ransom for Tevez’s father once they figured out who he was.
It is somewhat common for criminals to kidnap athletes or their families to get a quick ransom in Argentina.
Tevez joins the unfortunate group of former Argentina star’s Juan Roman Riquelme and Diego and Gabriel Milito, who, in 2002, both had to negotiate the release of a family member from kidnappers.
In addition to Juventus, Tevez has played for Manchester City, Manchester United, West Ham United, Corinthians, and Boca Juniors. He has 154 goals in 298 appearances for those clubs, according to Soccerbase.com.
He has also played in 64 international games for Argentina and played in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, according to Independent.ie.
