Katherine Heigl is breaking her silence on the difficulty she’s had in her professional life, arguably since 2008 when she left ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and did a string of romantic comedies. An expose published in The Hollywood Reporter did not help the public’s opinion of her following a few box office flops.
Heigl spoke with Marie Claire UK she felt “betrayed” by her career.
After she refused to be in the running for an Emmy award for her role as Izzie Stevens on Grey’s for not being “given the material this season to warrant" one, she said her career "suddenly turned on me.”
She explained, "The thing that was my best friend for a long time [my career] suddenly turned on me. And I didn't expect it. I was taken by surprise and angry at it for betraying me."
Heigl took a break in 2009 after films like The Ugly Truth flopped, and now admits she should’ve broadened her horizons and dipped in some other genres.
“I had an amazing time. I love romantic comedies. I was so stoked to be doing them. But maybe I hit it a little too hard. I couldn’t say no. There’s nothing wrong with them, but maybe I overloaded my audience. I should have done a superhero movie or a psychological thriller,” she said.
She did think about quitting the business, saying she thought she would “maybe open a knitting store, get my money out of retirement accounts and live off that, live off the land," but ultimately she’s a “Hollywood animal as well.”
Next up for the actress is a return to television in NBC’s State of Affairs and Jenny’s Wedding with Alexis Bledel. She’s also mom to daughters Naleigh, 4, and Adalaide, 2, whom she shares with husband Josh Kelley.
