The Tampa Bay Rays topped the New York Yankees 4-3 in 12 innings on Monday night in the Bronx.
Rays’ second baseman Logan Forsythe was the hero, smacking a single to shallow center field that brought home left fielder Brandon Guyer in the top of the 12th.
Tampa Bays was two outs away from ending the game in the ninth, but Joel Peralta gave up a solo home run to New York second baseman Brian Roberts, which tied the game at three.
The Rays jumped on top early with a home run by designated hitter Matt Joyce in the top of the first. Right fielder Kevin Kiermaier made the score 2-0 with his own solo homer in the third.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Yankees got on the scoreboard with an RBI triple by left fielder Brett Gardner. He came around to score and even the game at two on an RBI ground out by shortstop Derek Jeter.
Tampa Bay recaptured the lead in the eighth on an RBI base hit by catcher Ryan Hanigan, according to ESPN.com.
Rays’ reliever Brad Boxberger picked up the win, throwing two scoreless innings. Reliever Jose Ramirez suffered the loss for New York.
The Rays, who have won three in a row and five of last six, look to continue their recent success on Tuesday night in game two of the series. The pitching matchup is slated to be Tampa Bay’s David Price against New York’s Hiroki Kuroda, reports ESPN .
“We’ve been playing hard all year, Forsythe said after the game on MLB.com. “We don’t think we’re out of any game, and things are starting to turn our way a little bit. Hopefully the hard work we keep putting in keeps coming out.”
