A new revival of A.R. Gurney’s unique play Love Letters is about to hit Broadway and several well-known actors have been recruited for stints in the show. Carol Burnett, Martin Sheen and Mia Farrow are just a few who will read letters sent between two possible lovers.
The first stint will feature Farrow and Brian Dennehy, beginning on Sept. 13 at the Nederlander Theater, where Newsies is being staged through Aug. 24.. According to The Wall Street Journal, Dennehy will then be paired with Burnett. Alan Alda and Candace Bergen take over in November, then Stacy Keach and Diana Rigg step in the next month. In January, Sheen and Anjelica Houston will read the letters.
“Even if you’ve seen it, you will want to see how each new actor approaches the material,” producer Nelle Nugent told the WSJ. Nugent also said there will be some bonuses for audiences who come back to see different versions of the play.
According to Variety, the play's unique structure allows big stars to step in without needing extensive rehearsals and do not have to commit to long stretches. Gurney's play allows for the actors to read from letters printed in front of them, so they won't have to memorize.
Gregory Mosher is directing. The play was first produced in 1988.
