NBC announced on Tuesday that the network has picked up freshman medical drama The Night Shift for a second season.
The series has managed to average decent numbers in the ratings during its eight-episode first season, according to The Hollywood Reporter, likely helped by airing after America's Got Talent.
The Eoin Macken-starring drama is averaging a 1.4 rating in the advertiser-important 18-49 demographic and 6.7 million viewers overall.
The series follows Macken's character of T.C. Callahan, who now works in the ER after completing a tour of duty, reports Deadline. Jill Flint, Brendan Fehr, Daniella Alonso and Freddy Rodriguez also star.
The show was originally greenlit alongside NBC's biggest hit of the fall season The Blacklist and was set to debut during the midseason, but instead it was moved to the summer.
Co-creator Jeff Judah explained that those involved in the series "wanted to bring the 'golden hour' to the patients -- to bring the military aspect of the show."
The second season will likely premiere in summer 2015 and run for 14 episodes.
