The San Diego Padres were four outs away from losing the title of being the only Major League franchise without a no-hitter. Rookie Odrisamer Despaigne held the New York Mets without a hit for the first 7 2/3 innings before giving up back-to-back hits that resulted in him leaving the game with a no decision.
Holding a 1-0 lead in the eighth, Despaigne gave up a double to New York second baseman Daniel Murphy. Third baseman David Wright followed with an RBI single to tie the game.
"We haven't had one and I'm always hoping that we're gonna get one," Padres manager Bud Black said, according to MLB.com. "Once you get past the sixth, I think there's a legitimate chance. I thought he was throwing well enough to think that, 'Hey, it could happen.'"
Black took Despaigne out after Wright tied the game. Despaigne received a no decision despite his stellar performance in just his fifth Major-League start. He is 2-1 with a 1.31 ERA, reports The New York Times.
In the ninth, the Padres secured the win on a slow roller that seemed to be routine play for Mets reliever Josh Edgin. However, Edgin was unable to field it cleanly, and by the time he picked it up and flipped to first, Seth Smith was safe at first and Cameron Maybin had crossed the plate.
