McHale’s Navy star Robert “Bob” Hastings died at 89 years after struggling with pancreatic cancer on and off for 15 years.

Known for his role as Lt. Elroy Carpenter on 1960s sitcom McHale’s Navy,Hastings also had a long careers as a radio actor, a career that began when he was 11 years old as reported by the Burbank Leader.

Hastings lent his voice to shows such as The Daily Mirror Radio Gang and Adventures in King Arthurland. After spending time in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Hastings returned and acted as the voice of Archie Andrews in the ArchieComic radio spinoff according to the Internet Movie Database.

Reached by the Burbank Leader, Hastings’ younger brother Don Hastings, who used to act on As the World Turns stated, “I miss him. He was a great guy. He was a good father and a good husband. That's hard to be in show business.”

Before his death Bob Hastings was treated at both the Disney Family Cancer Center and Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center.
