It is official Rashard Lewis will need surgery on his right knee. As a result, the Dallas Mavericks are voiding Lewis’ contract.

He was supposed to be the back up forward for all-star forward Dirk Nowitzki. He would have added veteran stability that Vince Carter brought to the franchise a year ago. The Mavericks have not had a true back up for Nowitzki, so now they will not get a chance to see what Lewis could have done for them.

President of basketball operations Donnie Nelson stated that, "It came to our attention during Rashard Lewis' physical that he is in need of a medical procedure on his right knee."

Last season, a similar situation occurred with the Dallas Mavericks involving Devin Harris. When he took a physical after a deal was agreed opon with the team, they found out Harris needed foot surgery, reports NBC Sports.

The former two-time all star averaged 4.5 points, and 1.8 rebounds coming off the bench for the Miami Heat last season, according to ESPN.

Despite his statistics not being on an all-star level anymore, Lewis showed he could still be productive scoring and shooting three pointers when needed.
