Former Knicks point guard, Raymond Felton, pleaded guilty to felony gun charges in a Manhattan court on Wednesday. In return to pleading guilty to criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of a firearm, he will not receive jail time.
The former Tar Heel was sentenced to 500 hours of community service, which can be served out of New York, and must pay a $5,000 fine.
Felton was traded along with Tyson Chandler to the Mavericks back on June 26 for Spanish point guard Jose Calderon, Center Samuel Dalembert, and guards Wayne Ellington and Shane Larkin, reports Sports Illustrated.
Felton was arrested back in February when his wife claimed he threatened her with a firearm, that according to ESPN New York. Felton turned himself in to the police, and had his attorney turn in his Belgian-made FN Herstal pistol.
Felton had one of his worst season’s as pro this year, which created frustration for Knicks fans, as he had recently signed a three-year, $10 million contract. The Knicks had a 21-36 record when the news broke of his arrest in February, which just added to them being the laughing stock of the league.
Phil Jackson likely would have tried to get rid of Felton for his on the court issues alone, but the gun distraction may have given him some added incentive to ship Felton to Dallas. Felton was out of shape early in the season, which was one of the reasons the Knicks had such a miserable time trying to run offense for long stretches.
