The Tampa Bay Rays (36-49) are making up ground, having now won four of five, and are 12-7 since June 11. They are now under 10 games behind first-place AL East leading Toronto for the first time in a month according to The New York Times.
Outfielder Brandon Guyer drew a two-out walk against Yankees pitcher Jose Ramirez. After Guyer stole second, Forsythe’s single dropped into center field for the go-ahead run.
Forsythe is 16-for-35 in his 10 games played since June 16, a batting average of .457 which has helped raise his average from .178 to .242 according to MLB.com.
A pair of solo home runs by Matt Joyce and Kevin Kiermaier gave the Rays a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Yankees tied the game twice, in the third and ninth inning, but failed to do so a third time.
