Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino will begin the road back to the Major Leagues for the second time this season.
Victorono went down with a strained right hamstring in May and has not played for the Big League team since May 23. As he tried to begin his rehab assignment in June, back soreness interrupted his progress and forced him to take more time.
He will begin this rehab assignment with the Red Sox single-A affiliate, the Lowell Spinners. His first game with them should be Wednesday, reports Jason Mastrodonato of masslive.com.
Victorino, who is 33 years old, has played in 21 games this season for the Red Sox. He is has posted a .242 batting average, 10 RBI, one home run and two stolen bases, according to D.J. Short of NBCSports.com.
After about a week of pain-free baseball in the minors, Victorino will be able to return to the Red Sox. They are hoping to have him back shortly after the All-Star Break.
Victorino averages playing in 129 games a year. He has a .276 batting average, .341 on-base percentage and .430 slugging percentage over the course of his 11-year career. The four-time Gold Glove winner has been a member of two World Series Champion teams, according to baseball-reference.com .
The Red Sox are currently in last place in the American League East division with a record of 39-50. They have lost 12 of their last 17 games.
