Even in its 10 year anniversary, The Notebook is still regarded as one of the most iconic love movies in this generation, particularly due to the chemistry between lead actors Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. What people didn’t realize, was that there was a completely different chemistry behind the scenes. In fact, Ryan Gosling wanted to get Rachel McAdams kicked off the set.
According to a VH1 interview, McAdams and Gosling were far from friendly while making the film. “Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not,” said director Nick Cassavetes. “Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, “Nick come here.” And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, “Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?” I said, “What?” He says, “I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.”

Luckily it was realized that the movie depended on the actor’s performances and chemistry, so Cassavetes held an impromptu therapy session, E! News reports. The director says he believed Gosling respected McAdams for standing up for her character, and maybe he was right being that the two stopped fighting and became and on again-off again couple for four years.

The Notebook celebrated its 10th anniversary on June 25.
