Linebacker Larry English was released by the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday.
English was drafted by the Chargers in 2009. Despite the loss of English the Chargers have depth at the outside linebacker position. Melvin Ingram and Jeremiah Attaochu are two players that will replace English. Dwight Freeny and Jarret Johnson are also expected to see playing time at the outside linebacker position along with Thomas Keiser,Cordarro Law, and Tourek Williams. English was going to make $1.54 million this year, the final year of his rookie contract, according to NFL.com.
"We'd like to thank Larry for his five years of dedicated service to the Chargers," Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said in a statement. "Larry always gave us everything he had on the field while making significant contributions to many deserving organizations in the San Diego community."
Injuries have plagued English in his five years in the NFL. In those five years he has played in just 52 games. He has 82 tackles and 11 sacks in those 52 games, according to ESPN. He suffered a torn biceps during week ten of last year and was out for the rest of the season.
English will become a free agent immediately. He won’t be subjected to any waivers and can sign with any team.
