San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain was put on the 15-day disabled list Monday with irritation in his right elbow. An MRI taken on the veteran’s arm came back clean, showing no ligament damage.

This injury is gives Cain his third trip to the disabled list this season according to the San Jose Mercury News. The Giants have given no timetable for Cain’s return.

"We'll let it calm down and get back to throwing, and we'll go from there," Cain said.

This is a tough blow for the Giants who will now lose one of their most consistent starters. Over the past five seasons Cain has had 20 starts in which he’s given up one run or less, gone seven-plus innings and still not get the win.

This season Cain is just 2-7 with a team-worst 4.18 ERA. Despite pitching through elbow soreness for some time, Cain pitched three quality starts in a row before hitting the disabled list according to CBSsports.com.

Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit will start in place of Cain against the Phillies on Tuesday.
