The Seattle Mariners have acquired outfielder Chris Denorfia from the San Diego Padres for outfielder Abraham Almonte and minor league pitcher Stephen Kohlscheen.
Denorfia, 34, adds an immediate upgrade to the Mariners outfield both defensively and at the plate. Denorfia can play all three outfield positions and can do damage against left-handed pitching. For his career Denorfia bats .301/ .367/ .447 against left-handed pitching according to CBS Seattle. This season Denorfia is batting .242 with 16 RBI and 13 extra base hits.
Denorfia is a career .275/ .335/ .397 hitter over nine seasons. Denorfia will become a free agent after the season.
Almonte, 25, was the opening day starter in center field for Seattle, but was optioned to the minors after 27 games. Almonte was hitting .198 for the Mariners and .267 with six home runs and 31 RBI in Triple-A Tacoma according to MLB.com.
Kohlscheen, 25, is an overall record of 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 55 strikeouts in both Double-A Jackson and Tacoma.
