With Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s schedules packed, filming new episodes of the international hit Sherlock has been tough. However, we might eventually hear from everyone’s favorite modern day Sherlock Holmes (sorry, Jonny Lee Miller) soon enough.
In an interview with the Telegraph, Freeman, who has become a spokesman for the show, said that a Christmas special may be in the works, but it won’t air until Christmas Day 2015. It “looks pretty likely” that filming will take place early next year.
“If that’s going to be a special - I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired - I think that might be for next Christmas. A Christmas special. That’s what I understand,” Freeman continued.
Freeman made very similar comments back in April. At that time, the Fargo star said that any new Sherlock project would be a one-off, not a full three-episode series. He even joked that Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss might “beat him up” for talking about it.
Back in January, co-creator Steven Moffat added that they woulnd’t rule out making a Sherlock theatrical film, but stressed that they like having the show on TV. Each episode is practically a movie anyway, running 90 minutes each.
Cumberbatch and Freeman have both become international stars since Sherlock, with Freeman as the face of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films. Cumberbatch was also busy in 2013, with 12 Years A Slave, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Fifth Estate all in one year. His performance as Alan Turing in the upcoming The Imitation Game might even earn him an Oscar nod.
Sherlock airs on the BBC in the U.K. and PBS in the U.S.
