Free-agent Spencer Hawes has agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Clippers.
According to ESPN, Hawes deal is for four years and $23 million. The deal can’t be finalized until July 10 when the NBA’s moratorium on free agents ends. However the Cleveland Cavaliers could complete a sign-and-trade deal with the Clippers before July 10.
"Even taking a little less money, this opportunity was too exciting to pass up," Hawes said. "I've had a taste of the playoffs before, but being a part of this team will be just incredible. You get to a point where you really realize what's important, and I was thinking: 'What would my 12-year-old self have done? What would he prioritize?' It was this opportunity and what they're building with the Clippers."
The Clippers weren’t the only team that Hawes was looking at going to. He had also visited with the Portland Trail Blazers and the Phoenix Suns, according to USA Today.
Hawes has played for three teams in his seven-year career. He has played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Sacramento Kings, and the Cavaliers. However he has been on losing teams during his career. He has missed the playoffs five times. Last season he played for the 76ers and the Cavaliers and averaged 13.2 points and eight rebounds, according to Yahoo Sports, which first reported the deal. Hawes also averaged three assists per game last season.
The Clippers are also interested in Brooklyn Nets free agent Paul Pierce.
