The reigning NBA champions have extended the contract of head coach Gregg Popovich. The San Antonio Spurs have not disclosed the terms of the contract for the three-time NBA Coach of the Year, though we do know it is for multiple years, that according to a statement released on NBA.com.
The signing did not come as a surprise, as the Spurs have already resigned several pieces of their team that defeated the Miami Heat in five games in the NBA Finals last month. Last week the Spurs brought back key reserves Patty Mills, and Bois Diaw, but the extension to Popovich’s contract is what should really keep Spurs fans optimistic for the future.
Since taking over as head coach for the Spurs back in 1996, Popovich has guided the team to five NBA titles. Popovich is one of the NBA’s best coaches as he has managed to consistently have teams that can contend for a title, despite playing in a small market.
The Spurs were a defensive minded team back in 1999 when they won their first NBA title over the Knicks. However, the Spurs defeated the Heat this year by running precise and efficient offense, showing that Popovich can adjust his coaching style and still be successful.
Kurt Helin of NBS sports believes this means Popovich will stay with the Spurs longer than their star power forward, Tim Duncan. Duncan has been playing under Popovich since he was the first pick in the NBA draft back in 1997.
