The St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a deal with catcher A.J. Pierzynski Friday night. Pierzynski, 37, is expected to play Saturday in Chicago.

Pierzynski was designated for assignment earlier this month by the Boston Red Sox and was released six days later after signing a one-year $8.25 million contract according to Yahoo. Pierzynski hit .254 batting average with four homes and 31 RBIs with Boston this season.

"You want to try and find a team that can win. You don't want to go to the team that's in last place and just kind of play out the string," said Pierzynski.

Pierzynski will be asked to fill a hole at the catcher position with All-Star and MVP candidate Yadier Molina out 6 to 10 more weeks with a broken thumb.

Pierzynski, who was ripped by a former Boston teammate as “negative influence”, will be playing for his sixth team in 17 seasons according to ESPN.

The Cardinals are in the middle of a tight NL Central race that has them three games behind first place Milwaukee Brewers.
