Starz announced on Tuesday that the premium cable network is developing a series based off Neil Gaiman's award-winning novel American Gods.
The FreemantleMedia North America adaptation now has Hannibal's Bryan Fuller and The River's Michael Green joining as executive producers and showrunners, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Gaiman will also executive produce.
Starz has put in an order for a script-to-series commitment, with FMNA on to produce. FMNA will distribute the series, while Starz will have SVOD and network pay TV rights.
"When you create something like American Gods, which attracts fans and obsessives and people who tattoo quotes from it on themselves or each other, and who all, tattooed or not, just care about it deeply," Gaiman said. "It's really important to pick your team carefully; you don't want to let the fans down, or the people who care and have been casting it online."
TheWrap reports that the 2001 novel follows Shadow Moon, an ex-con, who is hired to guard Mr. Wednesday, who is actually a god looking to consolidate forces with others against newer gods.
American Gods has won a Bram Stoker, Hugo and Nebula Award for Best Nobel.
