After its incredible success following its theatrical release back in November, the Disney film Frozen has become an instant classic.
Children and adults alike fell in love with the animated film, with its outstanding musical performances and one-of-a-kind storyline. Based on the Hans Christian Anderson novel, The Snow Queen, Frozen was met with widespread acclaim from critics and has even been considered the best Disney animated film of all time.
Frozen ranks as the highest grossing animated film of all time, the fifth highest grossing film of all time and the highest grossing film of 2013.
In addition, the film earned a variety of awards including two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Let It Go”) and a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
Months after the film’s original release, the Frozen hype has not died down. Disney needs to capitalize on the immense success of this film and get Frozen on Broadway as soon as possible.
Disney is certainly not new to adapting its popular animated films to the Broadway stage. So far, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin have all made it to Broadway and experienced plenty of success.
While Frozen is still fresh in everyone’s minds and little girls are still dancing around singing “Let It Go,” Disney should hurry to follow up the film with a theatrical version.
Without a doubt, tickets to an adaption of Frozen on Broadway would be in high demand. In April, the Disney Store experienced a shortage of official Frozen products and toys, reported Cosmopolitan. Parents then searched eBay incessantly to fulfill their children’s needs for Frozen merchandise. One mother even paid $1,200 for an Elsa doll on eBay because she promised her daughter one for her Frozen-themed birthday party, according to the New York Post.
In January, Walt Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger confirmed that Frozen is in early development for the big stage, according to Broadway.com.
Idina Menzel, the voice of Elsa in the film (who is also no stranger to the Broadway stage), told Cosmopolitan that she would “absolutely” play Elsa on Broadway. And Kristen Bell, the voice of Anna, also said she would be interested in playing her character in the Broadway adaption.
However, unfortunately for all of the Frozen fanatics, it appears everyone will have to patiently wait for the Broadway adaption to be released.
“We’re not demanding speed. We’re demanding excellence,” Iger said.
