Through just 10 stages the top two favorites, defending champion Chris Froome and two-time winner Alberto Contador, to win the Tour de France have dropped out of the race.

Froome was the first to drop out after he crashed twice last Wednesday during stage five, according to the Daily Mail.

The day before, Froome also crashed, which left him with fractures in his left wrist and right hand, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Contador, the winner in 2007 and 2010, dropped out the race after crashing during the tenth stage on Monday. According to the AP, he crashed halfway through the stage, which left him with a gash in his right knee he then tried to continue, but only made it another half-hour before dropping out.

Contador, who became the favorite after Froome dropped out, started the day four minutes and eight seconds back from the race leader Tony Gallopin.

With both racers now out of the race, the Tour de France will be won by a race who has never won the month long race.
