There’s an argument to be made that HBO has never seen anything as highly anticipated as True Detective season two. Sure, there was the Sopranos finale and every season premiere of Game of Thrones, but nothing has been more universally beloved by viewers than seeing Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey trying to find the Yellow King. Now, with season two in the works, the Internet is hanging on to every word from creator Nic Pizzolatto.
In an interview with the Daily Beast after the Emmy nominations came out Tuesday, Pizzolatto confirmed that he is halfway through writing the new season. However, he couldn’t spill any plot details.
“We’re not keeping any secrets, so when something concrete develops, we’ll announce it to everybody,” he said. “But everything has just been empty rumors so far.”
HBO programming president Michael Lombardo could tell reporters at the TV Critics Association press tour on Thursday that the scripts are “more exciting than the first season,” reports Entertainment Weekly.
Interestingly, Lombardo and Pizzolatto seem to be contradicting themselves. Lombardo said that casting is underway and that an announcement could be coming as soon as next week. However, Pizzolatto told the Daily Beast that casting hasn’t even started yet.
Pizzolatto did confirm that there will be multiple directors this season, unlike season one, which was completely directed by Cary Fukunaga. (William Friedkin did hint that he might helm an episode.)
Also, Pizzolatto said that there will be four main characters, but couldn’t say if any of them would be female. The series will move to California, too.
True Detective earned 12 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. Both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were nominated.
