Two Costa Rican fans were stabbed and another was injured Saturday at a public viewing after the country fell to the Netherlands in the World Cup quarterfinals.
According to the Tico Times, the Public Security Ministry released a statement reporting that responders attended to the victims after a fight that broke out at the Plaza de la Democracia.
Authorities said that two of the victims were stabbed and one was hit with a bottle during the large gathering in the capital city of San Jose.
Ambulances transported the three injured to a local hospital. So far there has been no update on their condition.
It is unclear how the attack started, but officers arrested eight people believed to be involved in the violent altercation.
The Times noted that one of the suspects identified by the last names Delgadillo Ruiz, is wanted for weapons possession.
More than 1,000 supporters had gathered in the square to cheer on their team. Costa Rica lost the match 4-3 in penalty kicks.
