USA Network brought the creators and stars of Dig to the Television Critics Association press tour on Monday, where they showed off the first trailer for the limited event series and also explained why that limited aspect of the show should work in its favor.
Dig is a high-concept six-episode series that does sound a bit like The Da Vinci Code. It stars Jason Isaacs (Awake, Harry Potter) as an FBI agent in Jerusalem who is investigating the mysterious archaeologist Emma (Alison Sudol). During the investigation, they find a 2,000-year-old conspiracy that threatens all of human history. Anne Heche stars as Isaacs’ boss, the head of the FBI’s Jerusalem office.
The series was created by Tim Kring (Heroes) and Gideon Raff (Homeland). Kring was very excited about doing this series as a limited project, rather than an ongoing new series, explaining that there is a “power of scarcity.”
“When J.K. Rowling told the world she was going to write seven Harry Potters, it made those books very precious to people,” Kring said, reports The Hollywood Reporter. "[There] was something very compelling about that."
As for Raff, he hoped that the rest of the series could be made in Jerusalem. Although the pilot has been shot, they are currently in a production hiatus before filming starts on the last five shows.
“Hopefully everything will calm down and we’ll go back to what we planned and if not, we’ll sort it out,” Raff told reporters, notes Variety. “I was born and raised in Jerusalem… our hearts go out to everyone in Israel and Gaza right now and hopefully it’ll be resolved very soon.”
If everything does go as planned, Dig will start this fall.
