After nine seasons with the Atlanta Braves, Brian McCann held a .277 batting average, .823 OPS and was a seven time all-star. During his first season with the New York Yankees he only has a .221 average and .642 OPS through 71 games.
This past offseason McCann signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Yankees via NJ.
When asks to rate his own performance for the first half of the season he had this to say, “Horrible. Hitting–you know, I feel good behind the plate. But swinging the bat, I need to get better. We’ve just got to keep grinding. I’ve got faith in myself and I think we’ll swing the bats better.”
While he started off pretty poor, his swing has been the worst of late as he posted a .198 average and .580 OPS during the month of June.
With the Yankees a game under .500 with a 41-40 record McCann has put a lot of pressure on himself. “Myself – I'm a big reason for that," he said according to Yahoo. "Our pitching staff has been amazing. It's the big reason why we're at where we're at."
While his hitting has been abysmal, he is still a dominant defensive catcher as he has thrown out a career high 45% of steal attempts. With that said it will become a problem if his bat doesn’t start going because the Yankees now owe him $17 million a season through 2018.
