Los Angeles Angels pitcher Garrett Richards will be out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury.
Richards was injured in the second inning of Wednesday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox. Red Sox third baseman Brock Holt hit a ground ball to Angels first baseman Albert Pujols. Richards went to cover first base, but never made it because he fell to the ground holding his left knee in pain. He was taken off the field in a stretcher. An MRI showed that he tore a left patellar tendon and was put on the 60-day disabled list, according to ESPN. Richards will have surgery on Friday and is expected to be out for six to nine months.
"You're going to be thinking of Garrett once every fifth day when he was out there," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "You might not be able to replace that, but it doesn't mean that we're not going to be able to reach our goal as a cumulative pitching staff."
The loss of Richards isn’t good news for the Angels. Richard was having a good year. He had a 13-4 record with a 2.61 ERA, according to the Associated Press. Richards is the second starting pitcher that the Angels have lost this season. They lost Tyler Skaggs to Tommy John surgery earlier this year.
Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said that they would be open about finding a replacement for Richards. They have called up left-hander Wade LeBlanc from Triple-A Salt Lake to replace Richards. The Angels have a one and a half game lead over the Oakland Athletics in the American League West.
