Emma Ferrer has mostly avoided the spotlight, but she has made her modeling debut on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar, paying tribute to her iconic grandmother, Audrey Hepburn.
The photographer on the photo session was also paying tribute to a grandparent. Michael Avedon, the grandson of Richard Avedon, was the photographer, bringing back to life some of the iconic images Richard avedon took of Emma’s grandmother.
Emma never met her grandmother, but she wishes she did. She is 20 and the eldest daughter of Sean Ferrer, Hepburn and Mel Ferrer’s first son. Emma was born a year after Hepburn died of abdominal cancer in January 1993.
“The first images I have of her are, interestingly enough, when she was quite young,” Emma told Harper’s of her grandmother. "I remember seeing a photo of her jumping on a trampoline—I believe this was before I understood that she was famous. But I remember thinking that she looked like a friend I wish I could have had."
Emma said that she has seen My Fair Lady, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Roman Holiday, the movie that earned Hepburn her Oscar. However, Emma’s favorite movie is Funny Face, which featured Richard Avedon’s photos in a beautiful montage.
“I've been questioning a lot lately what she means to me,” Emma further explained. “I knew her image, of course, and that I happened to be, by pure chance, related to her. But as a child I couldn't really relate to Audrey Hepburn, the actress. To me, she was family. I can live with her through my father.”
