The Baltimore Orioles announced Tuesday that third basemand Manny Machado has been diagnosed with a right knee ligament sprain following an MRI exam.
At this point it is still to early to make a timetable for Machado’s return without more information on the sprain according to MLB.com.
Machado, 22, had an X-ray on Monday night that came back negative. Machado sustained the injury in the third inning against the Yankees on a broken bat ground ball swing that brought him to the ground in pain and forced him to get help down the dugout steps according to NBC Sports.
Machado underwent surgery on his other knee last October to repair a torn medial patellar ligament that sidelined him throught the first month of the 2014 season.
This season Machado is batting .278 with 12 home runs and 38 runs scored.
The Orioles have another injured infielder, shortstop J.J. Hardy has a sprained left thumb. When asked about their status manager Buck Showalter replied, “Right now we’ve got rooms for both of them in Chicago and Cleveland.”
The Orioles plan to provide an update on Machado’s condition on Wednesday.
