The Baltimore Orioles announce Wednesday that third baseman Manny Machado has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 12, due to a right knee sprain. This is Machado’s second stint on the disabled list this season.

Machado had an X-ray on Monday night that came back negative. Machado sustained the injury in the third inning against the Yankees on a broken bat ground ball swing that brought him to the ground in pain and forced him to get help down the dugout steps according to NBC Sports. Machado underwent an MRI on Tuesday that revealed no structural damage.

Machado underwent surgery on his other knee last October to repair a torn medial patellar ligament that sidelined him through the first month of the 2014 season.

This season Machado is batting .278 with 12 home runs and 38 runs scored according to MLB.com.

The Orioles called up infielder Cord Phelps from Triple-A Norfork. The team transferred catcher Matt Wieters, who had Tommy John surgery in mid-June, on the 60-day disabled list.
