The San Antonio Spurs have hired Becky Hammon to be an assistant coach for the ball club. She will become the first female assistant coach in NBA history.
According to USA Today, head coach Gregg Popovich is very pleased to have Hammon on board as being apart of his coaching staff. He believes she brings a lot of basketball knowledge to the table that will help the Spurs next season.
"I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff," Popovich stated. "Having observed her working with our team this past season, I'm confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs."
Hammon has been a WNBA player since 1999, and is going to retire after the 2014 season. She played with the New York Liberty from 1999 until 2006.
Since leaving New York, she has played with the San Antonio Stars since the year 2007, as proven by the New York Daily News.
She is not going to have to move far because she will be staying in San Antonio. This is ground breaking news because this opportunity opens the door for other females to be apart of coaching in the NBA in the future.
