Katy Perry showed up to the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night channeling Britney Spears’ past denim look she wore when attending the American Music Awards in 2001 with then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. Perry walked the red carpet with rapper Riff Raff, who channeled Timberlake’s all-denim ensemble.
Perry took to Twitter even before the VMAs to tell Spears to look out for the outfit.

It all started when Perry told Spears her impression of the Woody the Woodpecker was the “best thing I've seen all day.” The “Toxic” singer then challenged her to one as well, writing “@katyperry You're up next. #Noexcuses. You have 24 hours to do your best impression.”
“@britneyspears I'll show u my best impression on the red carpet at the VMA's tomorrow... Wait for it bb,” she replied.
Us Weekly notes Perry and Riff Raff collaborated together on "This Is How We Do," and really went for it with the fashion risk. Perry even carried a matching denim handbag, just as Spears did with her original look.
Spears showed she approved of the look, telling the “Dark Horse” singer she “looked amazing.”
.@katyperry Just when I thought the denim dress had retired....you bring it back! You looked amazing tonight bb 😉
