The cast of Downton Abbey has responded to the major promotional photo fail that was released last week, showing a water bottle sitting on the mantle of a photo of Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) and Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael).

The photo fail both looked out of place and was historically inaccurate – the water bottle hadn’t even been invented at that point in time.

The promotional photo promotes Season 5, which is set in 1924, when water bottles did not exist.

The photo has since been removed from social media sites, but the cast of the hit show has since posted a photo of everyone holding water bottles, poking fun at the gaffe. “The cast of #Downton embraced 'water bottle-gate' today,” reads the caption.

They even turned the unfortunate slip-up into an opportunity to raise awareness for UK charity Wateraid, which provides clean water to those in need.

A spokesperson explained, “After seeing the reaction the picture caused earlier this week, the cast and crew came up with the idea of turning some of this attention towards an issue around water that really matters. They hope that by posing for this picture they will be able to raise awareness and amplify the work of international charity - WaterAid."
