Charles Keating, an actor known for playing the villain in NBC’s Another World during the 1980s and 1990s, has died. He was 72 years old.
Keating died on Friday, his son Sean confirmed to the Los Angeles Times. The actor died at his Weston, Connecticut home following a battle with cancer.
Keating was a stage actor, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company, before he became a soap star. The Irish-born actor became close with Laurence Olivier and took advice on how to play MacBeth from Olivier.
On Another World, Keating - defined by his silver hair and ponytail - played the evil Carl Hutchins. He was a regular on the show in the mid 1980s until his character was killed. However, he would come back whenever his character returned from the dead (only to die again in some bizarre way). He was fired in 1998, but was welcomed back a year later for the show’s finale.
According to Variety, Another World co-star Alicia Coppola took to Twitter to remember Keating, who she called her “very first acting teacher.”
Charles Keating has passed. I am so very sad. Along w/ @LindaDano he was my very first acting teacher. The actress I am is because of them.

Keating won a Daytime Emmy in 1996 for his role and also appeared on All My Children and As The World Turns.
Movie appearances for Keating came in The Thomas Crown Affair (1999), The Bodyguards and Awakenings.
Keating is survived by Mary, his wife of over 50 years, and their two sons.
