Training camp is a place for players to learn their roles, prepare for the upcoming season and get acclimated with their teammates. For the Chicago Bears, this ideal of training camp is far from what happened on Tuesday.
Tight end Martellus Bennett slammed rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller to the ground during practice after Fuller tackled him up high and tried to strip the ball. Following the incident, head coach Marc Trestman ended practice early to prevent the situation from escalating even further, reports Sporting News.
To discipline Bennett for his outburst, the organization announced that he will be suspended indefinitely and will be fined.
Bennett, who posted 679 yards on 65 catches last season, remained steadfast on leading the Bears to success.
“I come to training camp for one reason and that's to prepare to win a championship,” Bennett said, according to Mail Online. “I play hard and go hard every single day. I'm probably one of the most violent people on the field. That's just my style of play. I'm going to continue to play the same way I always play. That's what I'm here for.
“Everybody talks about friendships, but really we are all preparing to win a championship. If we make friends along the way, cool. But I'm just trying to help the Bears win a championship and do the job to the best of my ability.”
Chicago’s most recent trip to the postseason was in Jan. 2011. The Bears kickoff this season with the Buffalo Bills at home on Sept. 7.
