As the Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers played their preseason game on Sunday, and many wondered aloud, where was star running back Jamaal Charles? Charles did not participate in his team’s game this past Sunday, because of an injured foot he injured while moving out of his training camp dorm room at Missouri Western State University.
Yes, that sound you just heard was a collective gasp by all fantasy players who already drafted Charles with their first-round pick.
Andy Reid said this during his post game conference call: “I’ll just tell you what happened. He was actually carrying a box down the dorms, and he came down the grassy slope there and just tweaked his foot, rolled his foot over on the curb. It was that simple,” according to KansasCity.com.
The Chiefs lost to the Panthers by a final score of 28-16 that night, but it was hardly the story.
“He was hurting that night,” Reid also added. “The next day he woke up and he was feeling a little bit better, and he was feeling better today, so we’re optimistic about it.”
The Kansas City first team offense was only able to muster six points against the Carolina first team defense. Without Charles, QB Alex Smith and company looked like a completely different, lackluster unit.
Charles accumulated 1,980 total yards and 19 TD’s last season, which helped the Chiefs to an AFC wild card berth. This also helped fantasy owners win championships, and the corresponding money that goes along with that title.
Despite the MRI coming back clean, for now the Chiefs will take a day by day approach with their super-star.
