The Cincinnati Bengals announced on Friday that the team has released running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

As ESPN noted, the move does not come as much of a surprise after the team used a second-round pick in May to draft Jeremy Hill out of LSU.

"It's very difficult to release such a fine player and person as BenJarvus," head coach Marvin Lewis said. "He has been an exceptional player and teammate, as well as mentor to our younger players. He has also been a standout person in the community. We thank Bennie for all he has done and wish him the best of luck in the future."

In addition to Hill, Cincy also has Giovani Bernard to help carry the load.
Green-Ellis spent the first few seasons of his career with the New England Patriots before spending the last two with the Bengals.

The 29-year-old was supposed to make just over $2 million this season, but the team decided to go with youth at the grinding position. Green-Ellis has dealt with a nagging hip injury, but he still could get picked up as an experienced backup for another team.

For his career, the veteran has 42 touchdowns and 3,914 rushing yards, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com.
