The Cincinnati Bengals have released running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis as the team gets down to the NFL mandated 53 man roster.
Green-Ellis is entering his seventh season in the NFL and this season would have been his third with the Bengals. He spent his first four seasons in the league with the New England Patriots, according to ESPN Stats.
Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis told reporters that releasing him was a hard decision. “He has been an exceptional player and teammate, as well as mentor to our younger players. He has also been a standout person in the community. We thank Bennie for all he has done and wish him the best of luck in the future.”
In his two seasons with the Bengals, Green-Ellis rushed almost 500 times for 1,850 yards and 13 touchdowns, according to Pro Football Talk.
Green-Ellis is still a productive running back, even though he rushed for a career low 3.4 yards per carry last season. Since 2010, he has rushed for 37 touchdowns, which is good enough for the fourth most in the NFL in that time span.
