Sir Cliff Richard denied allegations of sexual impropriety against an underage boy, while police searched his Berkshire residence on Thursday.
The Peter Pan of Pop denied the allegations and said he was co-operating with police during their investigation, AFP reports. "For many months I have been aware of allegations against me of historic impropriety which have been circulating online," Richard said. "The allegations are completely false."
He added that he would have preferred not to comment on the situation, but felt he had to after press reported on police searching his apartment in Berkshire.
Police spent five hours combing through the residence, according to BBC News, following the allegations. Little is known about what exactly Richard is accused of, only that it is of a sexual nature with a child under the age of 16, according to South Yorkshire Police.
BBC notes the sexual assault allegedly occurred during a Billy Graham rally back in the 1980s at a Sheffield football stadium.
Police currently say the investigation is in "really early stages" and found a "number of items" at Richard's residence they plan to take a closer look at.
The investigation is said not to be tied to Scotland Yard's Operation Yewtree, which is an ongoing investigation into underage sexual assault by the late Jimmy Savile and others.
