The Colorado Rockies placed outfielder Carlos Gonzales on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with left knee tendinitis and a sprained ankle.

Gonzales, 28, exited their game on Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks early after going hitless with three strikeouts. This is Gonzalez’s second trip to the disabled list this season. Gonzalez was sidelined five weeks after needing surgery to remove a benign tumor from his left index finger.

Gonzalez has had a disappointing 2014 campaign, batting just .238 and .723 OPS in 70 games. Entering this year he had a .300 career batting average and .887 OPS according to NBC.

"We felt like it got to a point where it wasn't getting any better," manager Walt Weiss said. "Defeating the purpose to send him out there ... give him some time for those nagging injuries to calm down."

The Rockies recalled outfielder Ben Paulsen from Triple-A Colorado Springs to fill in for Gonzalez.

The Rockies received more bad news when they learned left-hander Brett Anderson, who missed most of this year with a broken finger, was diagnosed with a bulging disc in his lower back according to ABC Denver.
