Emotions were running high when Atletico Madrid played host to rivals Real Madrid in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup. The Spanish Super Cup is played between the previous year's winner of La Liga, which Real won, and the Copa del Rey, won by Atletico. The first leg ended in a 1-1 with draw, so Real was desperately looking for an equalizer after going down 1-0 in the second leg when Mario Mandzukic scored just two minutes into the game.
According to BBC, Real's best chances to score were created by James Rodriguez, who the club paid £71 million to bring over from Monaco this summer. Real's chances of coming back were all but ruined when Luka Modric received his second yellow card in in stoppage time, reports SB Nation.
The frustrations were mounting for Real, who beat Atletico 4-1 in May's UEFA Champions League Final. With defeat staring him in the eyes, Real Madrid's star player, Cristiano Ronaldo, appeared to have punched Atletico defender Diego Godin as Godin attempted to defend a corner kick. Ronaldo tried to make it look like he was just breaking free of Godin - who was playing fairly physical defense- but seemed to have the intent of hurting Godin. Ronaldo swung his arms three times at Godin's head, with the third blow knocking the Uruguayan international to the ground. Ronaldo received a yellow card for his series of jabs.
Atletico will not let Ronaldo's lack of sportsmanship spoil their revenge from last year's Champions League defeat. Real has hopes as repeating as European champs in 2014-2015, but will first need to prove they are the best team in their own city. Ronaldo and company will have a chance to do just that on Sep 13, as the two sides will meet again for the third time within the span of a month.
