Demi Lovato has posted an emotional snap on Instagram in the wake of last week’s MTV VMAs.

The “Really Don’t Care” singer put together a side-by-side comparison of the last four times she has attended he VMAs in an effort to reflect upon just how far she has come. Lovato famously entered rehab back in 2010 to recover from bulimia and self-harm.

The photo shows the singer and former Disney star before treatment and also three years post-rehab through the present. Lovato added a thoughtful and inspirational caption to the Instagram post, highlighting her struggle and the importance of self-love.

“This picture makes me feel so many mixed emotions. I remember the day I wore the dress in the very first picture. I remember asking for spanx to flatten my stomach because I use to feel so heavy and ‘fat.’ Now looking at this picture, you can clearly see my hip bones,” she wrote.

She wrapped up the post by thanking her fans and supporters while waxing philosophical on taking charge of her own life. “It TRULY just goes to show you that your perceptions can lie to you. OR they can make you learn to enjoy life.”

After thanking her fans, she referenced the tattoos she has on her wrist with a bit of support for those struggling with similar self-esteem issues. “Never forget staying strong is worth it,” said Lovato.

Lovato is reportedly working on new music.
