Doctor Who returned Saturday night to BBC America in the United States and with a new Doctor in tow, set a new TV ratings record for the series.

The premiere drew 2.2 million viewers with the initial telecast, but scored another 408,000 viewers with an encore two hours later, TheWrap reports. That's the best start Doctor Who has had airing on BBC America.

With Peter Capaldi now in place as the Doctor, the British series snagged the top spot among cable programs in both overall viewership and in the 25-54 demographic.

Of course the U.S. numbers don't come close to how the show debuted in the United Kingdom, according to TVByTheNumbers. Series eight kicked off with 6.8 million viewers checking in. That's the highest premiere for the series since the last time Doctor Who trotted out a new Doctor back in 2010.

Matt Smith's start to the series, which was also Steven Moffat's first turn as series showrunner, drew 8 million viewers.

In between the two airings of Who, BBC America debuted new series Intruders, which stars The Master - John Simm, to 796,000 viewers.
