Former Tennessee Titans linebacker Tim Shaw has announced that he has been diagnosed with ALS.
Shaw announced his diagnosis through a video posted on the Tennessee Titans website.
“A year ago, I was playing NFL football,” Shaw said. “I’ve been diagnosed with ALS. I’m here today to stand up and fight with all of you against this disease.”
In his video he took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and challenged every Titans player and every member of the Penn State football team to do it.
Shaw is 30 years old and played for the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Chicago Bears in addition to the Titans, according to Yahoo Sports.
The Panthers drafted him in 2007 after he played college football at Penn State.
While on the Titans he appeared in all regular season games on specials teams. He also started three games at linebacker, according to ESPN.
The Titans named him the captain of the special teams in both 2011 and 2012.
Shaw becomes the third former NFL player to be diagnosed with the disease. In 2007 former Baltimore Ravens linebacker OJ Brigance and in 2011 former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason have been diagnosed, according to NBC Sports.
