Author George R.R. Martin likes to keep the readers of the A Song of Ice and Fire books in suspense, but he has left clues in the books that might reveal his ending. The author, whose books are the basis for HBO’s Game of Thrones, said that some fans have even put those clues together to correctly guess how it all ends.
Martin appeared at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, where he revealed the some fans do know how it ends, even though he still has two books left to write. According to The Telegraph, he did tell the fans in attendance that he “wrestled” with the idea of now changing the ending to surprise those fans, but he won’t do that. He’s worked too hard to betray the clues in the previous novels.
“So many readers were reading the books with so much attention that they were throwing up some theories and while some of those theories were amusing bulls--- and creative, some of the theories are right,” Martin explained. “At least one or two readers had put together the extremely subtle and obscure clues that I'd planted in the books and came to the right solution.”
Martin added that the fans who do not read online message boards will still be surprised by the ending.
“Some of my readers who don't read the boards, which thankfully there are hundreds of thousands of them, will still be surprised and other readers will say: 'see, I said that four years ago, I'm smarter than you guys,’” he said.
Martin has been working on the sixth book and there is no set publication date. There were concerns that the series might go to eight books, but Martin said in June that he still wants to end the series in seven.
HBO’s series is currently the most-watched show in the network’s history, even topping The Sopranos.
